The growth and promotion of technology video games and computer games over the past two decades have taken over the world in such a manner that it led many to believe that traditional board games would soon vanish from the world as a form of entertainment.
If you are one of those parents who have ever told your kid to play board games and how interesting and entertaining they used to be. I bet I know what answer you must have gotten. It must have been some thing like: board games in the 21st Century? Board games are like 19th century, right? When I have a PSP, an Xbox, a broadband internet connection and a mobile phone, why would I need board games? But the surprising thing is that these little monsters of today have so many thing to keep them busy yet they come and you about being bored. Board games used to be a universal pastime that was shared by all, regardless of age. It was one of the few shared experiences that could gather kids, parents and grand-parents, all three generations, together for an afternoon or evening of fun. The kids today are in the habit of playing computer games against the computer only in which the computer usually repeats its move in every other game so the kids know what to expect next. With Board games things always change. Each time you take it out, there’s something new waiting to surprise you. The basic rules of the game remain the same; it is the rolls of the dice that make the game interesting. The element of luck that is involved in the game varies how you play the game and how your opponents do. It is definitely quite different from a computer game.
Parents today are worried sick that their kids today keep on sitting in front of the television screen playing play station or the computer screen playing games. They seem to have lost connection with the real world. The good part about board games is you can’t play a board game alone. You need at least one other person and that other person is a live person who isn’t half the world away on the internet. So you can easily be aware of your kids company. As far as the adults are concerned after 8 hours at work, the last thing they would want to do is sit down and play on the computer for another 5 hours. It would give you such a tendonitis that you would think it is better not to play games on the computer and if you think you are going to practice all the good ergonomics of sitting straight, taking breaks and then play then I think you will be concentrating more on your posture rather than relaxing, the main objective of playing games in the first place.
Bring board games for your children and let them discover the simple, yet immensely enjoyable pleasures these board games can bring. |
